The Kite Runner Essay

Then I understood. Amir and Hassan are not supposed to publicly to show affection, friendliness, or brotherhood because, in their culture, it would be inappropriate for a Hazara servant to have such a close relationship with his Pashtun master. For the same reason, Baba cannot show affection to Hassan, a Hazara, either. Nevertheless, he does so in subtle ways, such as through gestures of kindness, buying Hassan gifts, or even paying for a hair-lip surgery.

Baba describes his childhood with Ali in a warm way but never refers to Ali as a friend. Baba is not supposed to befriend a Hazara, let alone have a Hazara son. Baba believed the cultural and social stigma associated with having a Hazara son would ruin his reputation. Social customs, religious tenants, family tradition, personal honor, and even negative elements like racism and ethnic tension are elements of Afghan culture presented in the novel.

Afghan culture is deeply rooted in the Afghani people, and, as the book demonstrates, neither political turmoil nor human exodus can strip the people of their beliefs, their culture, or their values. Remember: This is just a sample from a fellow student.

He once again did not win the election and after the new leader died he lost another election. When the newest leader died early too they decided since Ali has lost so much they would make him leader. The Sunnis recite a prayer showing deep respect for the four caliphs leaders including Ali 2. Sunnis could not tolerate them cursing their caliphs, which started the conflict 2. Hossenini knew of this and had Amir show with few words that he knew what he was talking about.

Hossenini may have not described this part of the conflict thoroughly but he is accurate. It helps back up the fact that there is a conflict between the two religions. Proving that Hossenini was accurate but not detailed. The Hazara people have difficult lives. Although they were also discriminated because of their race there is little information as to why. Though they still go through horrible treatment each day. Unfortunately, they may wake up and have a normal day for a few hours, then be kidnapped, killed, tortured, raped, or beaten Black. As they are living in these places, just like The Kite Runner, the Hazara people are used as servants and laborers Program.

Which proves Hossenini was accurate when writing this in his book. Hossenini portrays that because the adults of Afghanistan are discriminating then the children will be too. In The Kite Runner, Amir grows up in an environment where Hazaras are thought of as less than people. Also, Assef states that Hazaras pollute the Afghan land Pashtuns see Hazaras as intruders or unwelcomed visitors and they need to be taken care of.

For example, Hosseini shows the ignorance of the children when Amir is looking for a book about Hazaras, because all he knows about are their features. Due to lack of knowledge, the children would not know any better so they would just go based off appearance. The children would yell random insults at Hazaras, acting like their parents.

For some the only thing they knew of Hazaras was that they looked like Chinese people Hosseini 8. There is scarce information as to why Pashtuns have a form of hate towards the Mongol decent, however Pashtuns continue to express this hate. With all these insults coming from children under eighteen it reinforces the fact that children are influenced by their surroundings. Pashtun children notice their parents and other elders discriminating against Hazaras, which make them think their actions are acceptable.

A look at the culture in Afghanistan in The Kite Runner

Basically making him seem like less then human. The adults and other children influenced Amir. Proving that Pashtun children are discriminating too. As the children grow up they may also have children and pass down these discriminating tendencies. This in turn creates a cycle of unnecessary hate. With this cycle going on the discrimination will not be abolished. An individual can change what they believe is right or wrong. When Amir is older he goes back to Afghanistan to save his Hazara nephew. Unfortunately, these few individuals cannot change the mind set that most of Afghanistan has.

It was my turn to clamp a hand on his thigh, but Baba pried it loose, snatched his leg away. When he stood, he eclipsed the moonlight. He said it to Karim, but looked directly at the Russian officer. There is no shame in war. War doesn't negate decency. It demands it, even more than in times of peace. And you know how he always worried about you in those days. The problem, of course, was that Baba saw the world in black and white. And he got to decide what was black and what was white. Maybe even hating him a little. Or, maybe, it was meant not to be. And that is theft. Every sin is a variation of theft.

Do you understand that? When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness. Do you see? We crossed the border and the signs of poverty were everywhere.

On either side of the road, I saw chains of little villages sprouting here and there, like discarded toys among the rocks, broken mud houses and huts consisting of little more than four wooden poles and a tattered cloth as a roof. I saw children dressed in rags chasing a soccer ball outside the huts.

A few miles later, I spotted a cluster of men sitting on their haunches, like a row of crows, on the carcass of an old burned-out Soviet tank, the wind fluttering the edges of the blankets thrown around them. Behind them, a woman in a brown burqa carried a large clay pot on her shoulder, down a rutted path toward a string of mud houses.

You probably lived in a big two- or three-story house with a nice backyard that your gardener filled with flowers and fruit trees. All gated, of course. Your father drove an American car. You had servants, probably Hazaras. Your parents hired workers to decorate the house for the fancy mehmanis they threw, so their friends would come over to drink and boast about their travels to Europe or America. He pointed to an old man dressed in ragged clothes trudging down a dirt path, a large burlap pack filled with scrub grass tied to his back.

My mother actually fainted. My sisters splashed her face with water. They fanned her and looked at me as if I had slit her throat. My brother Jalal actually went to fetch his hunting rifle before my father stopped him. It was Homaira and me against the world. I was standing in the Westerns section when a guy next to me, sipping Coke from a 7-Eleven cup, pointed to The Magnificent Seven and asked me if I had seen it.

In Afghanistan, the ending was all that mattered. Did the bacheh film , the Guy in the film, become kamyab and fulfill his dreams, or was he nah-kam , doomed to wallow in failure? Was there happiness at the end, they wanted to know. After all, life is not a Hindi movie. Zendagi migzara , Afghans like to say: Life goes on, unmindful of beginning, end, kamyab , nah-kam , crisis or catharsis, moving forward like a slow, dusty caravan of kochis.
